The opossum is sometimes referred to as a living fossil. It has a legacy that goes back more than 65 million years!
Furthermore, Didelphis virginiana is the only marsupial in North America and is commonly seen across Tennessee.
In addition to carrying around up to 13 babies in their pouch and and boasting an awesome prehensile tail, opossums have more teeth than any other land mammal. Even so, they have some pretty cool tactics for tricking potential predators into leaving them alone. And they eat a lot of bugs. They are definitely an animal we are happy to have around.
We hope you'll join us for an education program or event to learn more about the opossum.
